Description
The AS3280 chip is Alfa’s modern equivalent of the classic CA3280 dual OTA, widely regarded as the best design of the original OTAs. It has improved current mirrors compared with earlier OTA designs, and also borrows the linearising diodes of the LM13700, giving it better performance than most OTAs. The CA3280 was used as the final VCA in the Sequential Pro-One, for example, with the other half of the chip providing a voltage-controlled glide filter for the Pitch CV.
This chip makes an excellent substitute for the LM13700, which is no longer available in DIP format (although currently we still have a few left). It has low noise and better bandwith figures than the 13700. The supply voltage can be anywhere from +/-2V to +/-15V, so it can run from a 5V or 9V supply, to Eurorack’s +/-12V or the full +/-15V.
